Mundane Monday: Literacy

Today, I’m going to express a little appreciation for an ability I couldn’t live without. Being literate.

Sailor Mercury

Several months ago, I read an article that stated 80% of New York high school graduates were illiterate and needed to be retaught how to read, write, and do basic math. I may not be the best reader or writer, and I sure as heck am no mathematician, but I couldn’t imagine being unable to read and write. How can someone even graduate without those abilities? I know I sound judgmental, but I’m genuinely curious.

Being literate is what allows me to run this blog, to enjoy online friendships, to select my favorite games, to browse Tumblr and YouTube, and the list goes on and on. It’s something I take for granted, but knowing there are countries where it’s basically a crime for a female person to be educated, I know I’m incredibly lucky to have been born and raised in a country like the United States.

Mundane Monday: Ear Piercing

Just a tiny thing I’m appreciative for. My ears are pierced and the holes have never closed. My mother had them pierced when I was at baby. Seven months old to be exact, and I’m very glad she did. I love earrings, but I’ve heard piercing is not only painful, but is done with a needle, an object that fills me with terror. If I didn’t have my ears pierced, I’d likely never have it done because I don’t like pain. I know there are clip-on earrings, but they are hard to find. The one and only pair I ever had were purchased from a thrift store and they hurt to wear because they were tight.

So thank you, Mom, for piercing my ears at an age that I would be too young to remember having it done.

Piercing gun

This is what would’ve been in my ear?! AHHH!!!

Mundane Monday: The Eds

While Winx Club is my most favorite cartoon right now, my favorite show of all time would probably have to be:

Edward, Eddward, and Eddward

This show never failed to make laugh until my sides hurt. Edd was my favorite, but every kid in the show was hilarious. I prefer the early episodes that took place in the neighborhood of their cul-de-sac to the later ones  that take place in their school, but I love just about every episode. With the exception of Eddy’s brother, who was a one-shot for the movie, I like every character too. To me, this show had a perfect run. 1999-2009 and ended spectacularly.

Mundane Monday: Buttercup

One of my favorite cartoons as a kid was The Powerpuff Girls. The show is currently run on Boomerang every night from 10:00 PM to 11:00 PM and I’ve taken to watching it if it’s an episode I like. While I like all three girls, I do have a favorite. Read the rest of this entry »

Mundane Monday: Electronic Payment Preferred

I love cards. No, not special occasion cards. Well, actually, yes. I love those cards too. But these are my most favorite kinds of cards.

Debit and Credit

I’ve got nothing against cash, but I am so appreciative how fast and convenient electronic cards are. Even though my purse isn’t really a mess, I hate having to go through my wallet and look for cash. I also don’t really like receiving change back and with cash, it’s very rare that I have the exact amount.

Of course, the dangers are how it’s easier to overspend, whether you’re debit or credit, and if someone steals your card, you might be screwed. I have the former under control and as for the latter, let’s just hope I have nothing worth stealing. Still, I’d rather carry my debit card than a bunch of bills in my wallet.

Didn’t I once mention being grateful for technology?
